Brunsviga Double counting machines model D13 Z18 mechanical calculator working

Acquired from a calculator collector in Amsterdam. A very rare double Brunsviga calculator and it still works! In the middle is a switch that can couple both. So you can use them as a single machine or as two machines where one adds and one
another subtracts, or two machines that both add or subtract at the same time. I am told that with this machine complex calculations were made for the fighter planes that had a machine gun on board, to calculate exactly that a shot was fired between the propellers.

Brunsviga Maschinenwerke Grimme, Natalis & Co AG is the company from 1871 that originally made sewing machines and household appliances. When engineer Franz Trinks took over the patent of the famous William Odhner calculators in 1892 (Arithmometer) Grimme, Natalis & Co started making calculators under the name of Brunsviga. Brunviga is Latin for Braunschweig, the place where this calculator was made. The company name contains AG which stands for Aktiengesellschaft. This machine was later renamed Olympia.

This heavy calculator works very well for its age. Of course there are traces of age present. The calculator is also decoratively very interesting due to its robust sturdy appearance and fits due to its size on a desk or in a cupboard and invites a conversation.
